The normal procedure for patients having suffered a heart attack is to be offered a rehabilitation course of twelve weeks duration, four weeks after discharge from hospital, provided by the NHS, locally in a physiotherapy unit. This course provides a series of exercises to help the patient regain a quality of life again.

Rochdale Heartbeat is a LOCAL based charity supporting the Coronary Care Unit at Rochdale Infirmary, also patients, family and friends. It is run entirely by volunteers, which ensures that all funds raised go directly to the project for which they were intended, in fact all the money goes back to you.

In 1988 it was questioned as to the value and duration of the course, the findings concluded that the course was invaluable, but once  it ceased, patients did less exercise, thus retarding progress. Consequently Heartbeat was born, with a view to help patients continue with re-hab as long as required. The group now meets fortnightly of an evening for those people who wish to continue doing do. If you are a heart patient, or if you feel you would like to support our cause, come along and join us. You will be sure of a very warm welcome.

FUNDING Heartbeat is an independent charity, giving complimentary support to the NHS heart patients in the metropolitan borough of Rochdale. Throughout each year a certain amount of fundraising takes place, and all monies derived from the same, also donations given, go back into the cardiac unit, providing new technology for local people. The money raised does not go to the national pot or into administration

Heartbeat appreciates only too well, that it is not just the patient who needs support, but the family as well, carers are just as apprehensive as the patient, sometimes more so. When there are no scars on the outside, its hard to understand the fears which can build up on the inside. Feelings like these are normal, and talking to friends, and others who have been there, can be a great help, and put things in perspective "its good to talk". Heartbeat provides for this need, as it is open to both patient and family, and has the full support of the cardiac team and the hospital trust. Visits to patients in hospital are made on a regular basis (weekly), talking and showing a video on, "What to do after a heart attack", or whatever is appropriate.
